Children's Privacy Notice

What is a privacy notice?

A privacy notice tells about your personal data:

  1. WHAT personal data we collect about you
  2. HOW we use your personal data
  3. WHAT you can do about it

This privacy notice is designed to be read by young people; you might want to read it with your parents, guardians, or a teacher, you can also read our Privacy Notice for older children and adults here. Find out more below.

What is personal information or data?

Here is Sue and Tom and they are children very much like you. They go to school, each live in a house and have a phone number at home so their friends can arrange to meet up with them. Their houses each have an address, so their friends know exactly where to go when they come over to meet.

You might already know this, but Sue and Tom’s name, address and phone number are their personal data.

Personal data or information is data that can be used to find out who you are.

Your name, address, date of birth, pictures and videos of you, your email address and school records are all personal information or data.

Be careful

Sometimes people you don’t know can actually use your personal information or data to trick you or put you in uncomfortable situations. That’s why it’s so important that you never give your personal information or data to anyone you don’t know! You should only give this information to people you trust like your parents or teachers, because your personal information is your private property and private property should only be shared with people you trust.

So, who are we?

We are IDL and we help support you with reading and writing learning, your school can tell you more about us too. We have some of your personal information (data) that we use to help give our learning solutions to young people like you.

You can read more about us here.

You, your parents or guardian can also find more information in our full privacy notice here.

How can you find out more or get help? - Contact Us!

You can ask us or our data protection officer (also known as a DPO) if you want to know more about anything we talk about here or if you want to use your rights. It is the DPO’s job to help us look after your data. Underneath here are our contact details for children in the EU and for everyone else.

But remember to mention our name ("IDL") in your email too!

WHAT personal data do we collect about you?

We collect the personal data that we need to do our job in helping your school:

HOW do we get your personal information/data?

We may collect your details on paper, sometimes by the internet/email or by telephone, directly from your parents/guardians, a teacher, a staff member of your school or when you use our app.

The government tells us that we can collect data as long as we look after it under the law and keep it safe. This law is called the General Data Protection Regulations, sometimes adults will also call it GDPR for short. In the UK we have the UK GDPR and in countries within the European Union it is called EU GDPR.

Is your personal data safe with us?

We have to keep your data safe and secure and not share it with anyone unless they are trusted. You wouldn’t walk into a big place full of strangers and just make it rain postcards with your name, address and telephone number, would you? No, of course you wouldn’t!

That’s why we take steps to make sure your personal information (remember, this is also called personal data) is kept under lock and key with only those staff who work for us allowed to look at it. Sometimes we may need to share your personal information with other trusted people to help your learning, such as staff members at your school or regulatory bodies who make sure the school (and us) are doing our job correctly.

What do you do with my personal data?

Privacy law says that we can use your personal data BUT we must have a lawful reason to collect and use your data and our reason is that we have agreed to help your school make sure you receive the right learning support.

Your parents or guardian can help you set up an account with us to use our services. They can also access the lessons or tests you have taken and see your results. They may be able to see other information, like the date and time that you have taken the tests and lessons. Your parent or guardian can find out more about how to keep you safe online here!

Sometimes we might have quite sensitive information relating to the learning support you may need.  We will need to get consent from you, (depending on your age and your school’s rules), your parents or guardians to use that sensitive personal information that is because that information is special and has more rules about using it.

YOUR RIGHTS

Your personal data matters as much as any adult’s data and you have all the same personal data rights as adults do.

The rights you have with us depend on why we are using your data and here they are:

You must be told how we use your information .(That's what this page does)

You can ask to see your information we hold. (Access)

You can ask us to fix your information if you think it is wrong. (Rectification)

You can ask us not to use information or only to use it in a limited way when you think the information is not right, or not to delete it if where we don't need it, you still do. (Restriction)

You can ask us to stop using your data. (Objection)

You can ask us to transfer information you have given us to you or another organisation, e.g. another school. (Portability)

If you want to use your rights or make any other requests, you can contact us.

We do think it is best if you talked with your parents or guardians and let them know what's going on and what you want to do.

If you want to complain then please contact us and we will do our absolute best to help resolve your complaint. If you are still not happy after that then you can always contact the ICO for more help on 0303 123 1113 or through their live chat Contact us | ICO. The ICO is the UK’s government body who makes sure your personal data is looked after
